Shoshannah White:
HELD BY A CLOUD
Magnetic Double #6, Gelatin silver photogram print
On June 1, Perimeter Gallery opens Held by a Cloud, an exhibition of recent work by Shoshannah White. Long known as a Maine artist whose subject matter is inspired by nature, science, human impact on landscapes, and a fascination with unseen worlds, Shoshannah has lived the last few years primarily in Roswell, New Mexico.
The work on view at Perimeter reflects her new environment and its phenomena: long film exposures capturing lightening storms over time, the surface of those images worked with wax and gold, silver, mica and graphite—materials mined, forged or extracted, that can shine or become almost invisible depending on lighting and perspective.
Paired with the lightning images is a series of photograms (cameraless prints) that make use of sand collected from the Rio Grande, crushed stone from Pennsylvania, and iron dust. The materials are activated by magnets and exposed to a photographic process, resulting in the depiction of invisible fields of energy.
The artist states: “Together, these works are a kind of byproduct of exploration: studies in particles and energy constantly reorganizing themselves.” She adds, “Beyond the science and materiality, I’m interested in how we weather storms, how we’re attracted to and repelled from one another energetically, or drawn to both positive and negative events.”
Shoshannah White has exhibited nationally, internationally, and extensively in Maine, including the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, the Maine Jewish Museum, the Tides Institute Museum of Art, and an upcoming solo exhibition at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Her work includes eight commissions for Maine schools funded by the Maine Percent for Art program. Additionally, through the support of SPACE Gallery’s Kindling Fund and a Maine Arts Commission grant, she initiated CHATTERMARK, a project in which she has installed mural-sized images of the Arctic and melting glacier ice on building exteriors in nine Maine towns, reminding us in the midst of our daily lives of both our connection and disconnection with our world. Each installation also refers viewers to a website that pairs the images with a variety of information and perspectives related to environmental concerns.
Held by a Cloud will be on view at Perimeter Gallery through Saturday, July 30. A closing reception to meet the artist will be held Thursday, July 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The gallery is located at Chase’s Daily, 96 Main Street in Belfast. Hours are 8 to 3, Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, call 207-338-0555 or email perimeter.art@gmail.com .
